When searching the catalog for books or the databases for journal articles, using words like memiors, letters, interviews, autobiographies, diaries, and correspondence in your search will help locate material that is or has primary sources.

Searching the book catalog or databases:

  • Search for "andy warhol" and (interviews or autobiographies or diaries) to locate primary sources
  • Some databases allow you to limit your search to primary resources only

The Archives of American Art: from the Smithsonian. Includes oral histories, letters, photographs, sketches and more.

NYPL Digital Gallery:
provides free and open access to over 685,000 images digitized from the The New York Public Library's vast collections, including illuminated manuscripts, historical maps, vintage posters, rare prints, photographs and more.

Smithsonian Institution Research Information Systems: Search 1.89 million records, with links to 178,800 images, video and sound files from dozens of Smithsonian libraries, archives, museums, and specialized research units.
